Why it Matters - Finding Sources & Academic integrity

Open book titled "Why It Matters" on a wooden desk under a lamp, with a steaming cup and books in a cozy, dimly lit library.

Academic integrity, embodied by thorough referencing and source verification, is paramount to producing credible research. Judy Hunter defines the dual function of citation: “A citation is both a signpost and an acknowledgement”. As a signpost, it guides the reader to the source material; as an acknowledgement, it recognises intellectual debt.

This practise is underpinned by strong professional ethics. C. S. Lewis provided a powerful definition of integrity: “Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching”. Max Weber elevated this concept within the academic environment, stating: “Within the confines of the lecture hall, no other virtue exists but plain intellectual integrity”. The rigorous demand for citation and referencing is the practical mechanism by which epistemic accountability is enforced in scholarship.

The importance of verification is highlighted by the existence of widely accepted, yet inaccurate, attributions within business literature. Relying on shortcuts in research can lead to costly errors in strategy, echoing Kotler’s conceptual link: “Good quality is cheap; cheap goods are costly”. The academic exercise of verifying a source ensures the integrity of the foundational knowledge upon which strategic decisions are built.

Academic institutions, such as the University of Northampton emphasise that Academic Integrity extends beyond merely avoiding plagiarism; it requires students to build confidence in using citation tools and databases to ensure their research is grounded in sound academic practise and intellectual integrity.

"Why It Matters" offers a collection of afterthoughts for my marketing students, specifically designed to deepen their understanding of the week's topic. It provides crucial added insights to the content explored in each workshop.
