Protecting Human Culture in the Age of AI

Why preserving human culture through creativity in film, music, art and gaming matters more than ever in the age of AI

Reflecting on my time co hosting the 14th Global Healthy Workplace Awards and Summit in Lisbon, Portugal, last month, one discussion stood out above all others: the rapid integration of artificial intelligence into the modern workplace.

Throughout the summit, there was significant emphasis on how AI can streamline workflows and boost productivity when used effectively. The potential benefits for operational efficiency are clear. However, during one of our sessions, I felt compelled to raise a deeper, more pressing question: as we embrace these technological advancements, how are we protecting human culture in the creative industries?

When we look specifically at film, music, art and gaming, the risk becomes obvious. Generative technology was promised as a tool to handle routine tasks, granting us more time for creative expression and leisure. Yet, we now see AI being pushed to generate the very art, stories, melodies and interactive worlds that give human life its meaning.

If society becomes content with consuming synthetic art, what happens to human culture? If we condition ourselves to engage primarily with AI generated creative work, do we risk altering our fundamental humanity, allowing our intrinsic capacity for deep creative thought, emotional resonance and storytelling to devolve over time?

The creative industries thrive on lived experience, vulnerability and shared human perspective. AI can analyse patterns, but it cannot feel, grieve, love or dream.

As leaders, creators and innovators, we must ensure technology serves as a tool to support human ingenuity rather than replace the essence of what makes us human.

A question for companies for all industries and sizes. How is your organisation ensuring that human creativity remains central to your business strategy?
