There are many great workplace health initiatives and programmes
Yesterday morning, I had the pleasure of joining Annabel Amos on BBC Radio Northampton to chat about something very close to my heart: mental health and the launch of the upcoming BBC Headfest Festival taking place at the University of Northampton on Friday 25th October.
Headfest is a day to pause, reflect, and start conversations about mental health – something we all need more than we sometimes realise. I also spoke about the work I do at Global Centre for Healthy Workplaces (GCHW) and our upcoming 12th Global Healthy Workplace Awards & Summit taking place in Brasilia, Brazil. Through the GCHW I’ve seen first-hand the impact that prioritising mental well-being can have on individuals and organisations alike through some truly amazing workplace health programmes from around the world.
It was a great to be able to share this on the airwaves today, and I’m excited about what’s to come. Let's continue to break the silence, support one another, and champion healthy minds in every space we occupy.
A couple of wellbeing tips for both individuals and businesses:
For Individuals:
Nature's Nudge: Just like a good cuppa, a daily dose of greenery can be a real mood-booster. Studies show spending time in nature reduces stress and can even boost creativity. Think lunchtime walks in Abington Park, or weekend strolls along the Canal or the many country parks in Northamptonshire!
Tech Time-Out: We all love scrolling, but research suggests taking breaks from screens, especially before bed, can dramatically improve sleep quality. This, in turn, leads to better focus and improved mental wellbeing. Maybe swap late-night phone browsing for a good book – Northampton has some fantastic independent bookstores!
For Businesses:
Sweat Sessions: Research shows encouraging employees to take short activity breaks during the workday reduces stress and boosts overall health. Think after-lunch yoga sessions or walking meetings to get your team's blood pumping (metaphorically, of course!).
Mental Health Matters: Open conversations about mental health in the workplace are key. Encourage employees to seek help if they need it, and normalise taking breaks for mental well-being. It's a win-win for productivity and happiness!
A happy and healthy workplace is a thriving workplace!
